Capital of Belgorod Region
Belgorod fortress was founded in 1596. Despite the fact that the official date of the foundation of Belgorod is the end of the 16th century, not long ago, the city celebrated its millennium. According to one legend, a settlement on the site of today's Belgorod was founded by Prince Vladimir the Red Sun.
In 1727, Belgorod briefly became the centre of Belgorod province, a major agricultural region, which included cities such as Kharkov, Kursk and Orel.
Belgorod was famous throughout Russia for melon growing, beekeeping and gardening. Belgorod has long been famous for its fruit orchards.
Since the mid-20th century, the transformation of Belgorod into an industrial centre took place. After the collapse of the USSR, Belgorod turned into a border town, just 40 km from the Ukraine border.
The profile sport in Belgorod is volleyball. The Belogorie local team has repeatedly been the champion of the country, and is known in the international arena. Belgorod Region was the leader among Russian regions in the provision of sports infrastructure per capita in 2012.
Gymnasts and Olympic champions Svetlana Khorkina and Natalia Zueva were born in Belgorod. It is home town to skater Andrey Lutay and footballer Valeriy Masalitin.
The city's name is associated with deposits of chalk, which can be found in large quantities around the city.
Belgorod Region is home to one of the pillars of Russian theatre, Mikhail Shchepkin. The city holds an annual festival consecrated to Shchepkin.
The popular fighter and multiple world champion in MMA Fedor Emelyanenko is a deputy at Belgorod Regional Duma.
In the early 19th century, the last Georgian empress Maria Georgievna and her daughter Tamara stayed in Belgorod.
Belgorod was founded during the same government "expedition" so were the cities of Kursk and Stary Oskol.
