This is a very young town, which has just recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. It was founded by geologistswho have discovered huge oilfields in this area. It all started with developing of the Ust Balyk oilfield in 1961. Drilled oil wells were a premise for further development and oilmen's huts became the prototype of Nefteyugansk. The status of a city was granted to Nefteyugansk in 1967.
Interesting Facts
The city is located on an island. It is surrounded by the Ob river from the north side and its creek Yuganskaya Ob from the south side. For this reason the city often \ is called "Small Japan".
Nefteyugansk is one of the "youngest" Russian cities. The average age of its citizens is 33 years.
Fire-fighting sport is very popular here. Sergei Akshentsev from Nefteyugansk is a double World Cup winner in this discipline.
In 2007 buried treasures were found near the city. They consisted mainly of Bulgar handcrafts. It was a sensation in the scientific world. The Volga, a usual residence of Bulgar people, is far away from the place where the treasures were found.
