Capital of Tomsk Region

It is the oldest city in Western Siberia, and a major cultural, scientific and educational centre. Founded as a fortress on the River Tom, it served as protection against the nomads. Later it became an important transit and trade centre along the Siberian highway. Then Tomsk became a prominent gold mining centre. In 1944, it became the capital of the Tomsk Region.

Celebrated skier, and six-time Olympic champion Lyubov Egorova, lived and studied and made her first steps in the sport in Tomsk. Natives of the city also include famous hockey player, coach and Olympic champion in Albertville 1992 Nikolay Borshevsky and Russian basketball team player Aleksandr Kaun. On the first day of winter, the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay was held in Tomsk. The heroes of the 55th Olympic Torch Relay Day were 100 torchbearers who covered a total distance of 19.4 km. Among the Olympic torchbearers were nominees of the Presenting Partners of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay: the Coca-Cola Company, OSAO "Ingosstrakh" and OAO "Russian Railways."
