In Gorny Altai the relay was met with the local fire worship ceremony

The Olympic flame arrives in the Republic of Altai on Monday, 67 days prior the start of the XXII Winter Olympic Games in 2014, it was met by the head of the Republic of Altai Alexander Berdnikov, and a welcoming ceremony was accompanied by a national fire worship ceremony.

"Today we have become the participants of the historical event of such scale that was not seen by the Republic of Altai during all the time of its existence. And it's an honor for us. Through the Olympic torch relay in the Republic of Altai, we can demonstrate to the entire Russia the heritage of our region, cultural traditions and our hospitality, to tell about outstanding personalities, and I'm glad that each of our residents will have a chance to become a partaker of the project of a national scale",- said Berdnikov.

The relay started at 11.00 of local time (8.00 Moscow time), and the first torchbearer became the famous strongman Ivan Nemtsev, a Master of Sports, multiple world champion in weight lifting, winner of the International Order of the Winged Lion. The torchbearers moved towards the ceremonial complex "Bai-Tash" ("Golden Gates of Altai"), symbolizing the unity of the Turkish nations and the ancestral home of all the Turks, where it will be taken by the Russian presidential councellor, an honorary citizen of the Gorny Altai Igor Levitin.

In total in Gorny Altai the fire will be carried by 70 people, 180 volunteers will be involved, and the total length of the route is 19.6 thousand meters. The relay in the region consists of three stages: after the stage at the ceremonial complex "Bai-Tash" the fire will pass the aqueous phase on the Katun river on the raft and then in the ski resort "Manzherok". In Gorno-Altaisk the torch with the fire will be carried in the Victory Park, near the National Museum, the stadium "Spartak", and the final events and lighting of the cauldron will take place at the central square of the capital region. It is expected that more than 30 million viewers will watch the ceremony.
