Capital of Krasnoyarsk Region

"Southern Capital", "Capital of Kuban" - these epithets are used for Krasnodar. Besides that, Krasnodar is the capital of the region that is hosting the Winter Olympic Games of 2012.

The history of Krasnodar begins from the time Catherine II granted Kuban lands to Black Sea Cossacks. The city was called Ekaterinodar. Its rapid development began in the second half of the 19th century after the railroad went through Kuban. Ekaterinodar became a major commercial and transportation center of the region. It remains as such even now.

Krasnodar is famous for its trampoline tumbling school, its representatives being Alexander Moskalenko and Irina Karavaeva. The guru of national handball Yevgeni Trefilov, popular Greek basketball player Lazaros Papadopoulos and former soccer player for Russia's national team Dmitri Khokhlov were born in Krasnodar. Now two Krasnodar teams are in Russia's premier soccer league. Matches for the World Cup in 2018 will take place in Krasnodar.
